Writing on behalf of all Cambodians and himself, President Hun Sen conveyed his pleasure in sending these sincere greetings to Mr. Larcher.
In his letter, President Hun Sen emphasized the deep resonance of French national unity with the Cambodian people, who received critical support from Paris in 1991 to commence their journey toward national reconciliation. Reflecting on their shared history, President Hun Sen wrote, “I have excellent memories of having shared with you, Mr. President, the presidential platform of the glorious parade of July 14, 2009, in Paris.”

Cambodia and France share a deep history of diplomatic relations that began in the mid-19th century when Cambodia became a French protectorate in 1863. This marked the start of significant French influence on Cambodian politics, culture, and society, with France playing a crucial role in defending Cambodia against territorial ambitions from neighboring countries.
The formal diplomatic relationship between Cambodia and France was established on November 4, 1952, when Cambodia was still under French protection. This official recognition marked a new phase in their bilateral relations, characterized by France’s continued influence even after Cambodia gained independence in 1953.
The Paris Peace Agreements in 1991 were a pivotal moment in Cambodian history, with France playing a key role in facilitating Cambodia's path to national reconciliation and peace. This support solidified the diplomatic relationship and underscored the importance of French involvement in Cambodian affairs.
Today, the diplomatic relationship between Cambodia and France continues to thrive, with both countries maintaining embassies in each other’s capitals. The strong cultural ties, shared history, and ongoing cooperation between the two nations highlight the enduring nature of their diplomatic relations.
