World Bank Reinforces Commitment to Cambodia’s Green and Agricultural Sectors

Phnom Penh, July 4, 2024 – The World Bank has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Cambodia’s green environment and agricultural development initiatives. Anna Wellenstein, Regional Director for East Asia and the Pacific at the World Bank’s Sustainable Development Practice Group, held meetings on July 3 with Dr. Eang Sophalleth, Minister of Environment, and Dith Tina, Minister of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries, to discuss ongoing and future collaborations.

In her discussion with Dr. Eang Sophalleth, Wellenstein committed to assisting the Ministry of Environment in implementing the Chakra Strategy on Environment. This includes significant support for the Cambodia Sustainable Landscape and Ecotourism Project (CSLEP). Dr. Sophalleth praised the World Bank's efforts in enhancing Cambodia’s environmental management, particularly in the areas of solid waste and plastic.

In a separate meeting with Dith Tina, Wellenstein lauded the effective cooperation between the World Bank and the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries in promoting agricultural advancements. Minister Tina emphasized the ministry’s focus on enhancing food security and fostering a sustainable local economy through the modern agricultural community initiative. This program aims to broaden agricultural production at the grassroots level while ensuring the sustainable use of natural resources.

These meetings underscore the ongoing partnership between Cambodia and the World Bank in fostering sustainable development and environmental conservation.
