Cambodian and Thai Parliaments to Update 2007 Memorandum of Understanding

Phnom Penh, July 4, 2024 – Khuon Sodary, President of the National Assembly of Cambodia, will lead a high-level delegation on an official visit to Thailand from July 11 to 12. This visit, hosted at the invitation of Wan Muhamad Noor Matha, Speaker of the Thai National Assembly, aims to reinforce the enduring friendship and cooperative relations between the two nations, with a focus on deepening legislative collaboration across all dimensions.

During her stay, President Sodary is scheduled to meet with various Thai officials, including the King of Thailand, the President of the Thai Senate, the Prime Minister, and her counterpart, Speaker Wan Mohammad Noor Matha. These meetings are intended to bolster and expand parliamentary ties within both bilateral and multilateral contexts. The relationship between the Cambodian and Thai legislatures has notably advanced, serving the interests of both nations.

A significant highlight of the visit will be the signing of a revised memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the two parliaments. This revision aims to update the original 2007 agreement to better address current mutual needs and more effectively serve the populations of both countries.

In addition to her official duties, President Sodary is also expected to visit several historical sites in Thailand. These visits are part of a broader effort to enhance and share experiences related to cultural and tourism cooperation between Cambodia and Thailand.

This visit follows a series of high-level exchanges between Cambodian and Thai leaders, reflecting a robust diplomatic engagement that has included visits from Thailand’s Prime Minister Setha Thavisin to Cambodia at the end of 2023 and Speaker Wan Mohammad Noor Matha in March 2024. Prime Minister Hun Manet of Cambodia also made an official visit to Thailand on February 7, 2024, underscoring the dynamic and cooperative spirit between the two neighboring countries.
