Hun Sen Urges Caution Against Social Media Scams Amidst Rising Fake News

Phnom Penh, June 26, 2024 – Hun Sen, President of the Senate of Cambodia, on June 26 urged citizens to exercise caution and critical thinking in the face of rampant social pollution caused by the spread of false information. The call to vigilance came in response to the discovery of fraudulent activities involving the use of his image to create fake social media accounts.

Highlighting a recent scam, Hun Sen warned the public about deceptive posts circulating on social media. These posts falsely claim that individuals can receive a $500 bonus by following a certain link. “This is a typical example of fake news,” he stated. Hun Sen emphasized the dangers of such scams, which can lead to identity theft and other serious personal security issues.

The Senate President advised the public to critically evaluate the credibility of information before believing or acting upon it. “Before you decide to register for a quick $500, think carefully about whether it sounds believable,” he said. He stressed the pervasive nature of malicious activities in society, saying, "Today, malevolent forces are polluting our society with fake news almost everywhere."
