Phnom Penh, June 26, 2024 – Cambodia's Ministry of Information is currently hosting the 7th Meeting of the Senior Officials’ Meeting Responsible for Information (SOMRI) Working Group on ASEAN Digital Broadcasting. This event, held in Phnom Penh from June 26, includes SOMRI delegates from other ASEAN member states and a representative from the ASEAN Secretariat.
The three-day meeting began with opening remarks by Has Sam Ath, Under Secretary of State at the Cambodian Ministry of Information and Chairman of SOMRI Cambodia. The session provides a platform for ASEAN countries to exchange expertise, brainstorm solutions, and foster partnerships aimed at enhancing the digital broadcasting landscape across the region.
“At the opening ceremony, we discussed how by working collaboratively, we can establish a dynamic and inclusive digital environment that empowers our citizens, enhances regional integration, and leads ASEAN towards a more prosperous future,” stated Has Sam Ath.
The digital revolution has fundamentally changed how people across ASEAN access information and entertainment, with a significant shift towards online platforms. This transition offers vast potential for broadcasters and content creators to broaden their audience.
However, challenges such as the digital divide remain, with disparities in access to affordable and reliable internet services. It is crucial for ASEAN to address these issues to ensure that all residents, irrespective of their economic status or location, can take advantage of digital broadcasting opportunities.
The 7th SOMRI Working Group meeting is set to explore several strategic areas:
Regional Strategies for Universal Access: Collaborative efforts to identify access barriers, share successful national initiatives, and explore public-private partnerships to enhance digital infrastructure throughout ASEAN.
Nurturing a Thriving Content Ecosystem: Encouraging cooperation between broadcasters and content creators across the region can lead to the creation of high-quality, culturally diverse content.
Leveraging Technology for Inclusive Development: Examining how emerging technologies like 5G, artificial intelligence, and machine learning can be utilized to promote accessibility and inclusivity in the digital era.
This meeting represents a crucial step for ASEAN in shaping the future of digital broadcasting and ensuring equitable access to digital advancements.
