Prime Minister Urges Citizens to Trust Cambodia's Justice System

Phnom Penh, June 25, 2024 — Prime Minister Hun Manet has called on the Cambodian people to place their trust in the nation’s justice system while directing the Ministry of Justice to amend the Penal Code. This announcement comes in the wake of a court case involving the murder of two individuals by former okhna Srey Sina.

Addressing the public through social media this morning, Prime Minister Hun Manet emphasized the government's dedication to strengthening the rule of law. He highlighted the importance of effective law enforcement in ensuring public security, maintaining social order, and addressing societal issues in a fair and just manner.

"In this case of murder, although the Royal Government cannot intervene in judicial matters, I urge the judiciary and the prosecution to meticulously review and enforce the law in this case," said Prime Minister Hun Manet. "They must act strictly and in accordance with the law to seek justice for the victims and their families, without any external interference."

The murder case, which has captured public attention, involves Mr. Srey Sina, who allegedly killed two individuals on June 14, 2024. Sina faces charges of murder with the illegal use of weapons and attempted murder, with potential sentences ranging from 10 to 15 years in prison. However, public opinion has deemed this potential punishment insufficient, arguing that Sina’s actions merit a life sentence.

Critics have pointed out that Cambodia's current laws have gaps that need addressing, a concern acknowledged by Prime Minister Hun Manet. In response, he has instructed the Minister of Justice to undertake amendments to the Penal Code.

"We cannot punish perpetrators beyond what the current law stipulates," Prime Minister Hun Manet stated in an afternoon message. "However, we can amend the law to impose harsher penalties for such grievous crimes in the future."

The tragic incident involving Srey Sina, 50, occurred on June 14, 2024, at a residence in Borey Peng Huoth, Boeung Snor, Phnom Penh. Sina allegedly shot and killed two engaged individuals following a dispute over clothing. The brutal nature of the crime has provoked strong public condemnation, especially after prosecutors charged Sina.

As Cambodia moves forward with potential legal reforms, the government’s commitment to ensuring justice and enhancing the legal framework remains a focal point for Prime Minister Hun Manet's administration.
