Over 100,000 Veterans and Their Dependents Receive Monthly Social Security Payments

Phnom Penh, June 21, 2024 – According to a recent announcement by Prime Minister Hun Manet, 109,034 veterans and 149,053 dependents are currently receiving monthly social security payments from the Cambodian government. This update was part of the Prime Minister's message commemorating the 17th anniversary of Cambodian Veterans Day, observed on June 21, 2024.

The Prime Minister noted significant increases in social security allowances that took effect in January 2023. The monthly social security payment for retirees and those with disabilities has been raised from 690,000 riels to 770,000 riels, with a further increase to 825,000 riels slated for 2024. Additionally, family allowances for the children of veterans and families of civil servants, including those in the armed forces, have seen adjustments. Starting January 2024, monthly allowances for spouses have risen from 15,000 riels to 30,000 riels, for children from 10,000 riels to 30,000 riels, and for parents or guardians from 8,000 riels to 30,000 riels per person.

Moreover, the government has provided an annual stipend of 50,000 riels for the traditional Khmer New Year to retirees, those with disabilities, and families of deceased veterans.

Hun Manet also mentioned the implementation of a refined data management system for veterans and their families. This system ensures efficient and secure monthly social security distributions through partner banks across all 25 provincial capitals. Initiated in January 2019, the bi-weekly payment scheme has been effectively integrated with healthcare provisions. The government has issued health care cards to those with disabilities and retirees, and health equity fund vouchers to family members of deceased veterans, allowing them free treatment at contracted hospitals.

The Prime Minister underscored the profound contributions of veterans and Cambodian citizens throughout history in safeguarding the nation's territorial integrity and fostering peace and social stability. These efforts are crucial for ensuring continued economic and social development for the benefit of all Cambodians.
