Australia Supports Battambang Ophthalmic Care in Combating Blindness in Rural Cambodia

Phnom Penh, June 13, 2024: Blindness continues to be a critical public health concern in rural areas of Cambodia, with many cases being preventable or treatable. Since 2007, Battambang Ophthalmic Care (BOC) has taken significant steps to address this issue by offering eye examinations, outreach programs, surgeries, and related services throughout northwest Cambodia.

Dr. Geoff Cohn OAM, an Australian ophthalmologist, has played a pivotal role in supporting BOC for more than a decade. His efforts have been crucial in providing essential equipment and training to enhance the clinic’s capabilities.

Recently, Pablo Kang, the Australian Charge d’Affaires, joined Dr. Cohn, Sok Lou, Governor of Battambang, and senior officials on a visit to BOC’s facilities. The delegation observed firsthand the profound impact of their collaborative efforts. The Australian Embassy expressed satisfaction with the substantial progress achieved through their support, highlighting the significant improvement in patient care made possible by Australian expertise and financial assistance.
