Commerce Minister Urges Cambodian Businesses to Embrace Alibaba for Global Reach

PHNOM PENH, May 28, 2024 — The Ministry of Commerce is encouraging Cambodian entrepreneurs and producers to tap into international markets by listing their products on Alibaba, the global e-commerce giant.

During a workshop titled “Beyond Borders: Bringing Cambodian Products to the Global Market Through Alibaba.com,” held in Phnom Penh on May 27, Commerce Minister Cham Nimul addressed around 350 local business leaders, underscoring the importance of the digital platform in expanding their global footprint.

In her opening remarks, Minister Nimul highlighted the benefits of leveraging Alibaba to access a vast international audience, which could significantly boost the export sales of Cambodian products. She stressed the importance for both established companies and small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to explore Alibaba.com as a means to promote and sell their products globally.

"By listing their products online, Cambodian businesses can greatly enhance their exposure to international markets and increase sales," said Minister Nimul.

To date, several Cambodian products have successfully registered on Alibaba.com, including Sela Pepper, Angkor Bird Nest, and products from Ly Ly Food Industry.

Jiali Pan, Director of International Affairs at Alibaba, echoed the minister’s sentiments at the workshop. She emphasized that Alibaba.com provides an invaluable gateway for Cambodian SMEs and entrepreneurs to reach buyers worldwide.

Further solidifying this initiative, Minister Nimul announced the upcoming launch of Cambodia’s national pavilion on Alibaba.com, which will coincide with the ASEAN-China Expo scheduled for September this year in Nanning, Guangxi Province.

This partnership with Alibaba forms a crucial part of Cambodia’s strategy to enhance its digital economy. The Royal Government of Cambodia is making significant investments in infrastructure development and promoting the adoption of e-commerce among businesses and consumers.

Despite being in the nascent stages of development, Cambodia’s e-commerce sector is poised for rapid growth. The collaboration with Alibaba is expected to accelerate this progress and position Cambodia as a significant player in the regional e-commerce landscape.

In October 2023, the Ministry of Commerce and Alibaba Group signed a Memorandum of Understanding to facilitate the direct sale of Cambodian products in the Chinese and ASEAN markets through the eWTP Platform, further promoting e-commerce in the region.
