Siem Reap’s Hidden Gem, Preah Dak, Joins Global Tourism Village Race

Phnom Penh, May 17, 2024 - Preah Dak village in Siem Reap province has been chosen to represent Cambodia in the prestigious United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) Best Tourism Village Competition 2024. The announcement, made by the Siem Reap Provincial Administration on Wednesday, highlights Preah Dak's unique blend of cultural authenticity and proximity to popular tourist destinations.

Situated in the Preah Dak commune of Banteay Srei district, the village thrives on tourism thanks to its location near iconic attractions like Banteay Samre and Banteay Srei temples, as well as Phnom Kulen National Park. This proximity, coupled with the village's preservation of traditional Khmer life, makes Preah Dak a popular choice for both local and international visitors.

"The decision to nominate Preah Dak was influenced by its genuine traditional character," explained Thim Sereyvuth, deputy director of the Siem Reap provincial department of tourism. "Tourists are drawn to the village for the opportunity to experience authentic Cambodian culture."

Recent infrastructure improvements by Banteay Srei district authorities, including roads, street lighting, and a home garden project, further enhance Preah Dak's appeal. Additionally, the village embraces the "One Village One Product" initiative, offering traditional rice cakes, palm cakes, Khmer pancakes, and other local delicacies. Traditional handicrafts made from bamboo and other materials are also readily available.

Sereyvuth expressed confidence in Preah Dak's chances, citing the various factors that led to its selection. "The Siem Reap Provincial Administration has high hopes that the World Tourism Organization will recognize Preah Dak as the best tourism village in the world for 2024," he said.

Preah Dak's nomination is part of a larger national effort. At the request of the National Committee for Clean Cities Assessment, Cambodia's Ministry of Tourism selected eight outstanding tourism villages to represent the country in the UNWTO competition.
