Tragedy Strikes as Respected Female Police Officer Takes Her Own Life

Phnom Penh, May 17, 2024 - Authorities in Stung Treng province are investigating the apparent suicide of Ai Sotheara, a 30-year-old Lieutenant General who served as Deputy Chief of Population Statistics.

On May 15th, 2024, at approximately 2:15 pm, Ms. Sotheara jumped from the Cambodia-China Friendship Bridge, also known as the Sekong Bridge, located in Sre Po village, Srah Russey commune. Her body was recovered by authorities the following day.

Ms. Sotheara was reportedly a well-respected officer within the Stung Treng police force. The news of her suicide has come as a shock to colleagues and community members alike. Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding her death and have not yet released any information regarding a potential motive.

Tragically, bridge jumping has become a concerning method of suicide in Cambodia.
