President of the Senate Urges Rapid Construction of Funan Techo Canal

Phnom Penh, 16 May 2024 – President of the Senate Hun Sen has urged the Cambodian government to expedite the construction of the Funan Techo Canal, stating that Cambodia has already fulfilled its national and international legal obligations. He emphasized that this project is in the best interest of the country.

In a special voice message on the morning of May 16, 2024, Hun Sen declared, "There is no need to wait any longer." He announced that this initiative represents Cambodia's political independence through its waterway transportation system and expressed confidence that it would not affect Cambodia-Vietnam relations.

"It is difficult to accomplish this in a poor country, but we must do what we can for our independence," he said.

President of the Senate Hun Sen clarified that this initiative is 100 percent Cambodia's idea, with no involvement from China. He responded to certain politicians and analysts who claimed that this project could lead to losses for Cambodia or result in the country losing land to Vietnam, describing these assertions as nationalist rhetoric lacking a sense of patriotism.
