Ministry of Health Urges Enhanced Security at Health Centers Following Fatal Shooting

Following the tragic incident where a doctor was fatally shot at a health post, the Minister of Health, Dr. Chheang Ra, has called on all provincial governors to fortify security measures at health facilities. This directive aims to safeguard health workers, patients, and their families around the clock.

The appeal was articulated in a letter issued on May 14, as part of the Ministry's initiative to ensure that health services remain accessible 24/7, with a particular focus on primary health care at health centers and posts. "The safety of our medical staff and the communities they serve is paramount," stated Minister Dr. Ra.

This initiative is part of the broader "Safe Village-Commune-Sangkat" policy, under which local police are urged to patrol areas surrounding medical facilities, especially those in remote locations. The Minister emphasized the importance of regular and mobile police presence to prevent further incidents and to create a secure environment for both day and night operations.

"The Ministry of Health earnestly requests local authorities, particularly the police forces at commune stations, to actively monitor and patrol around health facilities, ensuring the safety of everyone involved," the letter reads. Dr. Ra also extended his gratitude towards local authorities for their ongoing commitment to the security and well-being of the community.

The incident in question occurred on the night of May 12 at the Andong Kraloeng health post in Sen Monorom commune, Oreang district, Mondulkiri province, following a personal dispute between the victim and the perpetrator, who were in a relationship. Another casualty of the event was the daughter of the deceased, who suffered injuries.

In response to the tragedy, the Ministry of Health has issued a condolence letter, mourning the loss of the doctor and acknowledging the impact on her family and colleagues. The letter reflects on the significant loss of a valued health resource in Mondulkiri, emphasizing the critical need for enhanced protective measures at health facilities nationwide.
