Cambodian Senate President Expresses Desire for Dialogue with Aung San Suu Kyi

PHNOM PENH, May 8, 2024 – Hun Sen, President of the Cambodian Senate, conveyed his intention to engage in dialogue with Aung San Suu Kyi during a virtual meeting with H.E. Sen. Gen. Min Aung Hlaing, Chairman of the State Administration Council of Myanmar, earlier today.

During the videoconference, Hun Sen reiterated his request to H.E. Sen. Gen. Min Aung Hlaing for an online discussion with Aung San Suu Kyi, citing their past collaboration in ASEAN affairs as colleagues.

The Cambodian Senate President emphasized the significance of adhering to the five-point consensus and expressed optimism that progress in this regard would contribute to fostering peace in Myanmar.

Furthermore, Hun Sen welcomed the State Administration Council's decision to appoint a non-political representative to the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Retreat in January and encouraged Myanmar to continue participating in key ASEAN meetings.

In response, H.E. Sen. Gen. Min Aung Hlaing affirmed Myanmar's commitment to sending non-political representatives to ASEAN Summits and indicated openness to considering additional proposals. He also pledged to dispatch a special envoy to Cambodia in the near future to further discuss Hun Sen's initiatives and glean insights from Cambodia's National Election Committee regarding the organization of impartial and transparent elections.

Additionally, the leaders deliberated on cultural and sports cooperation between their respective ASEAN nations.
