Lok Chumteav Mao Chamnan Elected President of the Khmer Artists Association

PHNOM PENH, May 2, 2024 — Mao Chamnan has been elected President of the Khmer Artists Association for the sixth mandate, securing 527 out of more than 600 votes cast in the recent election.

The election, held under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, featured three candidates including Mao Chamnan, who is also recognized for her philanthropic contributions to the arts. Other candidates were Kouch Kevin, and Phat Dararath, but Mao Chamnan emerged as the favorite.

Following her election, Chamnan outlined her vision for the association, emphasizing collaboration with the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts and other related institutions. She highlighted plans to align with national policies and contribute to cultural development and preservation efforts, aiming to boost the economic sector and support the government's Pentagon strategy for its seventh mandate.

Chamnan also mentioned exploring investment opportunities from affluent individuals to enhance the film industry and expand its reach into regional markets.

The Khmer Artists Association, established in 2006, plays a crucial role in promoting Cambodian culture and supporting artists through various life challenges. It also assists the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts in organizing cultural activities and addressing the needs of artists facing hardships.

The presidency of the association, as stipulated by its statutes recognized by the Ministry of Interior, holds a term of five years. The most recent election was delayed due to the COVID-19 crisis but resumed with full proceedings at the Royal Academy of Cambodia.
