Widespread Public Support for Funan Techo Canal, Criticism of Extremists

PHNOM PENH, April 30, 2024 — The head of the Royal Government Spokesperson's Unit today highlighted strong public backing for the proposed Funan Techo Canal, casting it as a clear rebuke to what he described as "extremist politicians."

Pen Bona, also a minister delegate, shared his views on social media, identifying the extremists as convicted, self-exiled members of the now-dissolved Cambodia National Rescue Party. According to Bona, while the majority of Cambodians from various backgrounds recognize the canal’s potential to boost the nation's growth, these extremists have distorted facts for political leverage.

He criticized the extremists' reactions as baseless and detrimental, accusing them of underestimating the public, especially those experiencing daily life in Cambodia.

Bona noted that Cambodian students, intellectuals, civil servants, armed forces, monks, and the general public, including Cambodians living abroad, have overwhelmingly condemned the politicized and irresponsible stance of the extremists, resulting in their isolation.

In his post, Bona reiterated the socio-economic significance of the Funan Techo Canal, which is supported by a detailed technical feasibility study conducted by the government. He views the robust public support as a testament to national unity and trust in the government's diligent efforts and clear direction.
