Cambodian Prime Minister Attends Opening of UN-ESCAP’s 80th Session in Bangkok

PHNOM PENH, April 22, 2024 — Hun Manet, Prime Minister of Cambodia, embarked today from Phnom Penh for Bangkok to participate in the high-level inauguration of the 80th session of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP).

The Prime Minister was bid farewell at Phnom Penh International Airport by a retinue of high-ranking officials, including deputy prime ministers and senior ministers. This significant departure underscores Cambodia's commitment to enhancing its role on the international stage, particularly in discussions focusing on regional economic and social development.

The invitation, extended by Dr. Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Secretary of the ESCAP, highlights the Prime Minister's upcoming special address at the session. The theme of this year’s event, "Leveraging Digital Innovation for Sustainable Development in Asia and the Pacific," aims to explore the transformative potential of digital technology in advancing sustainable development across the region.

Deliberations at the session will focus on strengthening regional cooperation to address emerging global challenges and accelerate the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. The discussions are timely, given the increasing importance of digital technology in fostering economic growth and societal progress.

Joining the Prime Minister are Sok Chenda Sophea, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation; Ly Thuch, Senior Minister and President of the National Committee for ESCAP; and Chea Vandeth, Minister of Post and Telecommunications. This delegation reflects the high priority Cambodia places on collaborative efforts to address key issues facing Asia and the Pacific.

The participation of Cambodia’s leadership at this prominent international forum demonstrates the country's proactive approach in contributing to regional dialogues that shape the future of Asia-Pacific’s economic and social landscape.
