Cambodia Celebrates a Safer Traditional New Year

April 19, 2024, Phnom Penh – Prime Minister Hun Manet commended the peaceful and orderly conclusion of the Khmer Traditional New Year Festival, marked by a significant reduction in offenses compared to previous years.

During the unveiling ceremony at the National Defence University of Cambodia, the Prime Minister revealed that the festive period witnessed a decrease in public offenses by approximately 30 percent. The four-day festival, a cornerstone of Cambodia's cultural calendar, was celebrated nationwide with joy and good order, contributing to a safer environment for all participants.

The Prime Minister lauded the efforts of law enforcement and security personnel who maintained vigilance and safety, ensuring festivities went ahead without major incidents. Nearly 22 million trips were recorded across Cambodia's tourist hotspots during the New Year celebrations, with the majority being local tourists.

Leading the way, Kampong Cham Province welcomed over 5.3 million visitors. Prey Veng and Kampong Speu followed with significant numbers, contributing to a bustling and vibrant holiday atmosphere throughout the country.

The authorities recorded 79 cases of offenses during the celebrations, resulting in the apprehension of 150 suspects. These figures, though substantial, indicate improved security measures and heightened awareness among revelers.

The Prime Minister's acknowledgment reflects the Royal Government's commitment to ensuring public celebrations are safe and enjoyable for both citizens and visitors alike.
