Khmer Riel Now Available at Travelex Currency Exchange in Tokyo's Haneda Airport

Phnom Penh, April 18, 2024 – The Khmer Riel is now available at the Travelex currency exchange counter at Haneda International Airport in Tokyo, Japan, marking a significant milestone in the international recognition of Cambodia’s currency.

The National Bank of Cambodia celebrated this achievement by participating in a ribbon-cutting ceremony on April 16, 2024, at the Travelex Exchange Office at Haneda International Airport. The event was attended by Kim Ty Komly, Chief Operating Officer of the National Bank of Cambodia, and Cameron Hume, Global Wholesale Director and CEO of Travelex Asia-Pacific, along with representatives from various relevant institutions.

This introduction of the riel at a major international financial hub is designed to facilitate transactions for Japanese tourists visiting Cambodia, enabling them to easily exchange their currency. It also aims to attract more international visitors to the country. The availability of the riel at such a prestigious location underscores the international trading capability of the currency and reflects the growing confidence in and global recognition of the riel, thanks to the National Bank of Cambodia's long-standing efforts to stabilize and promote it.

This collaboration with Travelex marks the second occasion that the National Bank of Cambodia has succeeded in listing the riel on the trading platforms of international financial centers, following its debut at Singapore’s Changi International Airport in 2023. Plans are underway to continue this expansion to other global financial hubs in partnership with Travelex.

Travelex, established in 1976 and headquartered in London, United Kingdom, operates in 20 countries with over 1,100 branches in major international airports, shopping malls, and iconic commercial buildings, making it a leading player in the currency exchange industry.
