Cambodian First Lady Supports Cyclo Drivers with New Year Donations

Phnom Penh, April 9, 2024: In the spirit of the upcoming Khmer Traditional New Year, Cambodia's First Lady, Lok Chumteav Dr. Pich Chanmony, has extended her generosity to the cyclo driving community by donating to 296 members of the Cambodian Tricycle Foundation. The heartfelt gesture took place at the Phnom Penh capital hall on Saturday, with the city's governor and Chairman of the Board of the Cambodian Tricycle Foundation in attendance.

Lok Chumteav Dr. Pich Chanmony, who also serves as the Commissioner General of the Girl Guides Association of Cambodia, emphasized that the donation is a testament to the association's commitment to sharing love and care with those in need.

Initiated by former Prime Minister Hun Sen in January 2018, the Cambodian Tricycle Foundation has been a significant source of support for the country's cyclo drivers. It not only provides them with a modest allowance but also ensures they have access to free medical care, thereby playing a crucial role in preserving this iconic mode of transportation for the tourism sector and offering a lifeline to a vulnerable segment of society.

This act of kindness from the First Lady comes at a time when the cyclo drivers, integral to the cultural and tourist landscape of Cambodia, find themselves in greater need of support. It underscores a broader effort to safeguard not just a traditional means of transport but also the livelihoods of those who depend on it.
