"Khmer Sankranti in Malaysia" Celebrates Cambodian New Year at Wat Na Rainsy in Pontian

Phnom Penh, April 8, 2024: In a vibrant celebration of the Khmer New Year, the Ministry of Labor and Vocational Training, in collaboration with the Embassy of the Kingdom of Cambodia in Malaysia, the ESEA Working Group, and Cambodian Associations in Malaysia, hosted "Khmer Sankrant in Malaysia" on April 7, 2024. The festivities took place at the Preah Keo Ratana Rainsy Pagoda in Pontian, Johor Bahru, drawing members of the Cambodian community together to honor their cultural heritage.

The event featured a rich program of traditional activities, including counting bowls, praying, offering alms, quoting sand dunes, and enjoying food in solidarity. Attendees also participated in a variety of Khmer folk games such as throwing a box, pulling a towel, hiding a towel, beating a pot, and dancing, all of which showcased the national identity and the deep-rooted traditions of the Cambodian people.

"Khmer Sankrant in Malaysia" serves as a poignant reminder that, regardless of where they are in the world, Cambodians continue to uphold and celebrate their traditions and customs with pride and joy. This event not only strengthens the bonds within the Cambodian community in Malaysia but also shares the rich Cambodian culture with a wider audience, fostering a greater understanding and appreciation among different communities.
