Over 10,000 Spectators Gather at Angkor Wat for the Breathtaking Equinox Sunrise

Phnom Penh, March 22, 2024 – An impressive crowd exceeding 10,000 national and international visitors congregated at the historic Angkor Wat Temple in Siem Reap this morning. The gathering was in anticipation of the equinox, an awe-inspiring natural event that aligns the sunrise perfectly with the temple's central spire, as announced by the APSARA National Authority on March 21.

The weather conditions this morning proved ideal, granting tourists an unobstructed view of the magnificent sunrise, a moment the Authority was keen to highlight.

The equinox, a phenomenon marking the times of the year when day and night are nearly equal in length, stands in contrast to the usual disparity seen during other months. The occurrence at Angkor Wat, however, is by no means an accident. It is a testament to the foresight of the Khmer ancestors, whose architectural planning allowed for this natural spectacle to enhance the temple’s mystique.

This extraordinary event is observed twice annually, during the March (Spring or Vernal Equinox) and September (Autumn Equinox), drawing visitors from across the globe.

Angkor Wat's sunrise is renowned worldwide, with Mornings.co.uk, a leading UK website, naming it the premier location globally for witnessing dawn. “Angkor Wat, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, is not just a historical treasure but a cultural icon essential to any travel itinerary. Although its beauty is undeniable at any time, the sunrise here offers a truly unparalleled experience,” the website stated.
