Vanuatu Backs Cambodia's Pioneering Role in Hosting Mine-Free World Summit

Phnom Penh, March 19, 2024 – The Republic of Vanuatu has thrown its support behind Cambodia's forthcoming leadership role in hosting the Siem Reap-Angkor Summit on a Mine-Free World. This endorsement was articulated by the Consul General of Vanuatu in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Dr. Henry Savarimuthu, during a meeting on March 18 with Dr. Ly Thuch, Senior Minister and First Vice President of the Cambodian Mine Action and Victim Assistance Authority (CMAA), in Phnom Penh.

Dr. Savarimuthu conveyed Vanuatu's commitment to participate in the November 2024 summit, underlining the significance of Cambodia's initiative in galvanizing global efforts towards a mine-free world.

Expressing gratitude for Vanuatu's support, Dr. Ly Thuch highlighted Cambodia's tenure as the 2024 President of the Ottawa Convention. He outlined Cambodia’s ambition for the Pacific region's emancipation from landmines and ongoing discussions with other island nations, including Tonga, the Marshall Islands, and Micronesia, to join the anti-personnel mine ban treaty.

The upcoming summit in Siem Reap-Angkor is poised to mark a historic moment in the global campaign against landmines, showcasing Cambodia's leadership and commitment to a safer, mine-free world.
