South Korea Pledges Increased Job Opportunities for Cambodian Workers

Phnom Penh, March 11, 2024:The Republic of Korea has announced plans to expand employment opportunities for Cambodian workers in 2024, affirming a commitment to strengthen bilateral ties and foster economic cooperation between the two nations.

At a meeting held on March 8, 2024, Mr. Lee Jung Sik, the Minister of Employment of South Korea, conveyed this decision to Mr. Heng Sour, the Minister of Labor and Vocational Training in Cambodia. Mr. Lee emphasized the diligence and honesty of Cambodian workers as a driving force behind the initiative, highlighting the significant contributions they make to the Korean workforce.

The collaboration between the two countries, particularly through the Employment Permit System (EPS) established in 2006, has proven beneficial for Cambodian workers, enabling them to secure higher incomes, support their families, and acquire valuable skills and expertise in various sectors.

During the meeting, Minister Heng Sour proposed enhancing cooperation under the Skills Worker (E-7) program, surpassing the existing E-9 program, and exploring avenues to strengthen partnerships between Korean and Cambodian institutions in occupational safety, health, and vocational education and training.

In response, Mr. Lee Jung Sik expressed willingness to explore further cooperation, acknowledging the effective collaboration between the Ministries of Labor and relevant institutions of both countries in achieving mutual benefits.

The commitment to bolster job opportunities underscores the deepening friendship and cooperation between South Korea and Cambodia, paving the way for greater prosperity and shared growth.
