Japan Shows Interest in Cambodia's Affordable Housing Project

Phnom Penh: The inaugural affordable housing venture in Cambodia, Serey Mongkul Satellite City, has garnered the attention of a delegation from Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism. The delegation's visit to the project site on March 6 underscores the burgeoning cross-border collaboration aimed at addressing housing affordability.

Prak Angkeara, Director General of the General Department of Housing at the Ministry of Land Management, Urban Planning, and Construction of Cambodia, extended a warm welcome to the visiting delegation. The visit served as a platform to showcase the significant progress achieved at the Serey Mongkul Satellite City, a testament to Cambodia's unwavering commitment to its national housing policy. Collaboratively developed by the ministry and Worldbridge Homes Co., Ltd., the project aims to make affordable housing accessible to Cambodians across various income brackets.

Situated along National Road 21 in Sangkat Roka Khpos, Takhmao City, Kandal Province, and strategically positioned just ten kilometers from the upcoming Phnom Penh International Airport, the Serey Mongkul Satellite City comprises 2,457 housing units. This strategic location ensures convenient access to essential infrastructure and amenities, enhancing the overall quality of life for residents.

Catering specifically to low- and middle-income families, including civil servants, the project offers an opportunity for homeownership at a price point below US$30,000. This initiative forms part of a broader endeavor to ensure that affordable housing is not only accessible but also situated in a conducive living environment equipped with essential facilities. Furthermore, buyers benefit from certain tax exemptions, alleviating the financial burden associated with homeownership.

Youk Sothy Rith, General Manager of Worldbridge Homes, underscored the project's focus on quality, affordability, and thoughtful design, positioning it as an appealing option for individuals seeking cost-effective housing solutions.

The visiting delegation, led by Mr. Takamiya Shigetaka, expressed admiration for the project's innovative housing design and its steadfast commitment to affordability. Japan's keen interest not only signifies international acknowledgment of Cambodia's strides in sustainable housing development but also opens avenues for future collaborations and knowledge exchange in urban planning and construction.

This initiative marks a significant milestone in Cambodia's journey toward sustainable development and social inclusion, offering a replicable model of affordable housing that has the potential to inspire similar projects both regionally and globally.
