PM Albanese Recognizes Cambodia's Resilience Despite Dark Chapter

Melbourne, Australia: Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese commended Cambodia for its resilience and continued progress, acknowledging the country's triumph over the tribulations of its past. This praise came during a bilateral meeting with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet on March 5, 2024, amid the ASEAN-Australia Special Summit held in Melbourne, Australia.

Albanese reminisced about the longstanding ties between Cambodia and Australia, stretching over seven decades — even before Cambodia's independence. He highlighted the mutual benefits and strong relationship shared by the people of both nations.

In his discussions, Albanese voiced his enthusiasm for further strengthening the bilateral cooperation between Cambodia and Australia. He expressed admiration for Cambodia's ability to advance despite the devastating impact of the genocidal regime. "Cambodia is still great and moving forward," Albanese remarked, signaling a vote of confidence in the country's direction.

Responding to Albanese's accolades, Prime Minister Hun Manet expressed gratitude towards the Australian people and government for their support, especially during Cambodia's quest for peace in the 1990s. He acknowledged that Cambodia's socio-economic development was significantly aided by Australia's involvement in key sectors such as agriculture, health, demining, and security.

Looking to the future, Hun Manet outlined key areas for enhanced cooperation, including trade, education, employment, and defense. He also highlighted the potential for Australian investment, as discussed at the Cambodia-Australia Business Forum earlier that day, and celebrated the signing of an air transport agreement to boost tourism between the two countries.

Furthermore, Hun Manet extended an invitation to Prime Minister Albanese for an official visit to Cambodia at a mutually convenient time, aiming to further cement the friendship and cooperation between the two nations.
