Cambodian Interior Minister Calls for Transparency in Drug Testing of Police Officers

Phnom Penh – The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, Sar Sokha, has called on the leadership and officers of all National Police units to conduct transparent drug testing among national police officers. He emphasized the importance of not shielding any officers involved in drug use, including those who are nearing retirement, from the consequences of their actions.

This directive was issued during the closing ceremony and inauguration of achievements at the Police Academy of Cambodia on February 26, 2024. Sar Sokha stressed the need for the Ministry of Interior to prevent any oversights or loopholes that could undermine the effectiveness of the drug testing campaign among National Police officers.

The Minister reassured that the potential loss of officers due to drug-related dismissals should not be a concern, as the ministry is prepared to introduce new personnel to replace those who are removed from service.

Furthermore, Sar Sokha has instructed all leaders and officials under the Ministry of Interior, including civil servants, national police officers, and prison officials, to adhere strictly to official working hours. He has directed the General Department of Human Resources to enforce mechanisms ensuring all officers fulfill their duties in compliance with the laws and organizational principles.

Highlighting the significance of these measures, Sar Sokha referenced the ongoing efforts under the seventh mandate of the Royal Government of Cambodia, led by Prime Minister Hun Manet. He pointed out that the Ministry of Interior remains committed to supporting the reform program of the Police Academy of Cambodia. The aim is to develop a capable and professional National Police force that can effectively maintain security, public order, and enhance social security for the nation and its people, aligning with the Royal Government's political agenda and strategic objectives.
