ANGKOR: Archaeologists from the APSARA National Authority are conducting excavations in the southeastern part of the Bayon Temple, to study the sediments and size of what is believed to be an ancient pond in hopes of restoring it.
Archaeologist Khieu Chan says the excavations being carried out by the working team of the Department of Water, Forestry and Infrastructure Management to figure out the dimensions of the ancient pond and determine if it was filled in purposefully or eroded after Angkor was abandoned.
Khieu Chan said that the excavation aimed to study the connection between the pond and the ancient wall to know exactly what the ancient pond's structure size was.
He added that once experts have studied the size of the pond, the shoreline, and the depth of the ancient pond, the team will restore it to its original function.
