Cambodia Temporarily Suspends Some Frozen Meat Imports to Help Local Farmers

PHNOM PENH: The Ministries of Commerce and Agriculture issued a joint statement on January 12 to temporarily suspend the import of certain frozen meats, especially offal.

According to the statement, the six-month suspension will be implemented from March 12 to September 12, 2024.

Types of frozen meats subject to the suspension are beef liver, beef offal, pork livers, chicken livers and other frozen offal. Fresh, frozen and dried fish are all exempt from the order. The suspension will not apply to qualified investment projects that import goods to produce Cambodia’s exports.

The decision comes after livestock farmers in Cambodia complained about falling prices and their inability to compete with imported meat. Some farmers have had to abandon domestic meat supply, while concerns of illegally imported frozen mean are on the rise.
