Restoration Experts Closer to Completing Angkor Wat Tower

ANGKOR: Restoration teams have completed the latest phase of restoration at Angkor Wat’s southeast Bakan platform, making the site even more accessible and attractive than ever.

The third phase of the restoration project of the southeast Bakan platform of Angkor Wat began in early January 2023. Technical Officer for the Department of Conservation of Monuments and Preventive Archaeology, Kham Mony, said that his team has already repaired 292 broken stones, which were displaced from each corner, and reorganized those stones to their original location.

Kham Mony said that the technical team also restored the damage to other parts of the building by repositioning stones to be closed together, strengthening the structure of the whole temple.

The southeast Bakan platform was badly damaged by tree roots growing into the structure in addition to rainwater erosion that has weakened the foundation and broken building stones.

The technicians expect that once restoration is complete, Angkor Wat's Bakan Tower will be a main highlight of the Angkor Wat experience.
