National Assembly Hears Over 100 Grievances during First Session

PHNOM PENH: The National Assembly has heard 106 citizen complaints since beginning its new term on August 21, 2023. National Assembly Secretary-General Leng Peng Long confirmed that most of the complaints were related to land disputes.

The announcement of the General Secretariat of the National Assembly dated December 29, 2023, stated that out of 106 grievances, 44 cases were sent to the competent ministries to resolve and 61 cases are under review. The announcement also stated the remaining 14 complaints submitted were resolved by competent ministries and institutions.

Speaking at a press conference on January 4, Secretary-General of the National Assembly Leng Peng Long said that 80% of the complaints filed were related to land disputes. He added that the Human Rights committee of the National Assembly were responsible for those and did their job well.

"The first committee will check whether the ruling is appropriate or not and then send it to the person concerned, and if he does not agree, he can come and sue again," he said.

Leng Peng Long said that the National Assembly will do its utmost to assist the government in achieving the first phase of the Pentagon strategy to help Cambodia reach a high middle-income country by 2030 and a high-income country by 2050.

Since starting its new term with many new members and a new president on August 21, 2023, the National Assembly has completed 16 tasks, including the adoption of six laws. Major laws enacted so far are the National Budget 2024 and the Law for the Payment of the 2023 National Budget. The new National Assembly has also instated a new President, Vice President and members of the National Election Committee. National Assembly President Khuon Sodary has already met with esteemed domestic and international leaders and paid official visits to her counterparts in Vietnam and Laos, where she attended the CLV Parliamentary Summit late last year.

Following the closure of the first session of the National Assembly of the 7th legislature on December 31, 2023, the National Assembly will take a three-month vacation. During this time members of parliament are expected to be in the field, meeting with their constituents to hear their grievances and gather a report to present at the next National Assembly session.
