Choeung Ek Wastewater Treatment Plant Officially Inaugurated

PHNOM PENH: The Choeung Ek Wastewater Treatment Plant in Phnom Penh, was officially inaugurated on the morning of December 27, under the presidency of Prime Minister Hun Manet.

Japanese Ambassador to Cambodia, Ueno Atsushi, emphasized that the new wastewater treatment plant was developed with Japan's newly developed technical system of the highest quality.

According to Ueno Atsushi, the Choeung Ek Wastewater Treatment Plant features low power consumption, a simple electricity treatment system, and easy maintenance.

"The wastewater treatment system is important for a fast-growing city,” he said. “At the same time, it is not easy to find vacant land for the construction of a wastewater treatment plant in an area that is constantly expanding and developing.”

In addition to the construction plant, the Japanese government has provided technical cooperation for management units and legal frameworks by sending Japanese experts to the Ministry of Public Works and Transport and the Capital Administration.

The plant can treat 5,000 cubic meters of wastewater per day on an area of three hectares. The construction for the plant was officially opened on February 22, 2022 under the presidency of former Prime Minister Hun Sen with a grant of $24 million from the Japanese government.
