Cambodian Human Rights Committee Chair Urges Prison Officials to Uphold Human Rights Standards
Phnom Penh: Keo Remy, the Senior Minister and Chairman of the Cambodian Human Rights Committee (CHRC), paid a visit to Kandal Provincial Prison on Wednesday, December 20, 2023. The purpose of his visit was to assess the detention conditions, human rights practices, and to meet with detainees, including Khieu Samphan.
During his inspection at Kandal Provincial Prison, Keo Remy encouraged prison authorities and officials to exercise increased vigilance against violence and torture. He particularly emphasized the importance of adhering to both national and international human rights standards.
Keo Remy also took the opportunity to commend the leaders and officials of Kandal Provincial Prison for their diligent fulfillment of duties, leading to improvements in detainees' living conditions. These improvements align with the rights guaranteed by the law on prisons.
The Cambodian Human Rights Committee (CHRC) expressed its gratitude to all prison leaders and officials for their close collaboration with the CHRC in the past, which has contributed to the advancement of detainee rights and freedoms. Additionally, the CHRC contributed two tons of medicine and rice for use within the prison.
