Cambodian Prime Minister Holds Meetings with Senior Chinese Officials Post-Japan Visit

Phnom Penh: Following his return from Japan after attending the 50th ASEAN-Japan Anniversary Summit, Prime Minister Hun Manet met with senior officials from the Chinese government on Wednesday, December 20, 2023, at the Peace Palace in Phnom Penh. The two high-ranking Chinese officials were Gao Yunlong, Vice Chairman of the National People's Congress (NPC), and Wu Yan, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Education.

This meeting with the two senior Chinese officials occurred just a day after the Prime Minister concluded his five-day visit to Japan.

In a social media post on the evening of December 20, 2023, Prime Minister Hun Manet mentioned that Mr. Gao Yunlong discussed the historical relationship between Cambodia and China. He also confirmed that the delegation he led to Cambodia expressed an interest in investing in various sectors, including industry, education, and agriculture. These investments aim to materialize the agreements reached between Prime Minister Hun Manet and President Xi Jinping, who set 2024 as the year to enhance relations between the two nations, fostering tourism, trade, culture, education, and sports.

In response, Prime Minister Hun Manet affirmed that the Royal Government of Cambodia remains committed to strengthening and expanding communication mechanisms between the two countries across all fields and at all levels. He emphasized that 2023 marks the 65th anniversary of Cambodia-China diplomatic relations, during which cooperation has steadily grown, moving towards "a common destiny of Cambodia and China in a new journey."

As of 5 pm, specific details regarding the Prime Minister's meeting with Chinese vice Minister of Education Wu Yan had not yet been disclosed.

It is noteworthy that Cambodia's Prime Minister has continued to forge robust and dynamic relationships with multiple countries. During his visit to Japan, in addition to meetings with heads of state and government, he engaged in discussions with various Japanese companies. Today, the Prime Minister expanded his diplomatic agenda by not only meeting with Chinese officials but also holding discussions with Jacques Pellet, the French Ambassador to Cambodia.
