CPP President Hands over 2024 ICAPP Chairmanship to PM

PHNOM PENH: Cambodia will host the 12th ICAPP General Assembly in November 2024, where political parties from across Asia will gather to accomplish a shared goal of peace and prosperity for the region. Former Prime Minister Hun Sen, who is also President of the long-reigning Cambodian People’s Party, announced that next year’s event will be led by his son, Prime Minister Hun Manet.

The ICAPP General Assembly is a forum for political parties from Asian countries and Oceania to promote exchanges and cooperation between political parties, increase mutual understanding and trust, and promote regional cooperation in Asia. The goal is for political parties to create an environment of lasting peace and common prosperity in the region.

On December 15, former Prime Minister and CPP President Hun Sen met with ICAPP President Chung Eui-yong to highlight the important role the Cambodian People's Party plays contributing to the common goals of the organization. He added that the CPP has played an important role in leading the ICAPP and its Asian Cultural Council (ACC) toward cultural diversity in Asia and the world, through dialogue, understanding and mutual respect, especially through establishing a partnership with UNESCO.

The CPP President urged ICAPP to increase youth participation and promote digital evolution in social and economic connectivity. He also pledged to continue to actively participate in the ICAPP mission for a peaceful and prosperous Asia and to see a lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula. He then announced that he would be handing over chairmanship of next year’s ICAPP General Assembly to his son, Prime Minister Hun Manet, who is now Vice-President of the Cambodian People’s Party.

The 12th ICAPP General Assembly and related meetings include the 42nd ICAPP Standing Committee Meeting, the 3rd Asian Cultural Council Meeting, and the 7th ICAPP Press Forum. Hosting the event is a historic moment for Cambodia as 52 countries and partner institutions convene in the Kingdom to discuss common goals. The last time Cambodia hosted the assembly was in 2010 under the leadership of the former PM.
