PHNOM PENH: Nearly 400,000 kilos of frozen meat was seized from a warehouse in Sen Sok by the Phnom Penh Department of Animal Health and Production on December 4.
According to TVK Cambodia, the meat was seized due to lack of proper legal documents. The department’s Deputy Director Hun Sarath confirmed that all the frozen meat was imported from abroad without proper documents. The warehouse has been temporarily closed while the department waits for proper documentation.
According to Hun Sarath, the nearly 400,000 kilos of meat included chicken, chicken organs, pork and buffalo.
President of the Cambodian Livestock Association, Srun Pov, lead a conference last week where he emphasized the importance of regulation on frozen meat imports and said that importers must have proper documentation and meet industry standards. He said that illegally imported frozen meat is a public health concern and that consumers need to know that what they are buying is safe.
