De Vries Wins Formula E World Championship

INTERNATIONAL: Dutch driver Nyck de Vries has won the Formula E world championship. His rivals crashed out of the season's final race in Berlin on Sunday. De Vries actually finished in eighth place, but his season points helped him take the title, with Mercedes also clinching the teams' title.

The all-electric race took place at Berlin’s old Tempelhof Airport. It was won by Frenchman Norman Nato for Venturi, his first win in the all-electric series, but eighth was enough for de Vries to finish on 99 points, seven clear of Venturi's Eduardo Mortara who retired at the start when he smashed into the back of Mitch Evans's barely moving Jaguar. Neither driver was hurt. Other championship contender, BMW’s Jake Dennis, also crashed out after the re-start.

This year’s seventh season of Formula E is the first to be given full world championship status by the International Automobile Federation.
