PHNOM PENH: The China Assistive Devices and Technology Center for Persons with Disabilities (CADTC) provided much-needed equipment for those with limited mobility and vision on November 24.
In a donation ceremony at the Ministry of Social Affairs, CADTC provided dozens of various crutches, walking sticks for the blind, over 50 wheelchairs and over 200 electronic and hand-held magnifying devices. These donations amounted to a total of 700,000 yuan (or nearly $100,000 US).
Minister of Social Affairs Chea Somethy thanked the CADTC for providing the equipment and noted the importance of the donation to Cambodia’s disabled population.
"The current charitable donations have alleviated the difficulties of the Royal Government of Cambodia, as well as the Ministry of Social Affairs, Veterans and Youth Rehabilitation and the Disability Action Council, especially for persons with disabilities who are in need of access. These physical aids [are needed] now because the number of persons with disabilities is constantly increasing due to: traffic accidents, chronic diseases, old age, congenital malformations and unexploded ordnance left over from the war," he said.
Secretary of State for the Ministry of Social Affairs and Secretary-General of the Disability Action Council, Em Chan Makara, said that the donations will be distributed to 11 rehabilitation centers and NGOs to supply to those who need assistive devices. He pointed out that although Cambodia has factories to produce prosthetics and wheelchairs, they do not have the capacity to completely supply the needs of all Cambodians with disabilities, especially as the disability rate increases. He also said that locally-made equipment is not modern, sturdy and durable enough for long-term use.
CADTC Director Hu Guoqiang said that he visited a number of institutions related to physical assistance during his visit to Cambodia and that he had discussed more in-depth work to provide help to those who need it.
"We believe that we will play an important role in further enhancing mutual understanding between the two sides and promoting the benefits of bilateral cooperation in the field of physical assistance and vision,” he said. “In the future, I look forward to continuing to strengthen our relationship and good cooperation with Cambodia, promoting the coordination of the Belt and Road Initiative and disability-related work," he said.
