INTERNATIONAL: Roger Federer is undergoing more knee surgery and will miss the U.S. Open. The 40-year-old tennis star, regarded by many as the sport’s greatest-ever player, took to Instagram on Sunday to break the news to his fans. Federer says doctors have told him that the surgery is needed if he hopes to play professionally again. He’s hoping it will give him a "glimmer of hope" of returning to action. Federer says it’ll mean he’ll be in crutches for several weeks and out of action for what he called “many months”.

Federer is a 20-times Grand Slam singles champion, and had two knee surgeries in 2020. They kept him out of action for 13 months, but have still not done the trick. He withdrew from the French Open in June to save himself for Wimbledon. He reached the quarter-finals at the All England club but lost in straight sets to Poland's Hubert Hurkacz, failing to win a game in the third set – his first-ever love-6 game. That prompted many to wonder if he’ll ever actually return to professional tennis.
