Vietnamese Ambassador to Cambodia Urges Cambodian National Assembly to Facilitate Leader Exchanges

Phnom Penh: On the morning of Monday, October 23, 2023, Mr. Vong Sauth, the Second Vice President of the National Assembly, held a meeting with Mr. Nguyen Huy Taing, the Ambassador of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, along with his delegation. During the meeting, both sides expressed their satisfaction with the longstanding historical ties and enhanced cooperation in various sectors.

Mr. Vong Sauth took pride in the substantial achievements made by the two countries, notably the historic 84% border demarcation accomplishment, which holds great significance for future generations. He expressed his hope for the expeditious resolution of the remaining border issues between the two nations.

The Second Vice President of the National Assembly extended his gratitude to the Vietnamese friends for their continuous support to Cambodia, spanning from the pursuit of peace and development to their current assistance in the construction of the new National Assembly building. He also urged the Ambassador to assist in resolving other outstanding matters to expedite the construction work.

Within the legislative framework of the National Assembly, both countries have collaborated closely at all levels. Recently, the National Assemblies of Cambodia, Vietnam, and Laos embarked on a joint fact-finding mission to the Triangle area to understand the needs of the border provinces' residents. Their aim is to enhance common development and transform the region into a hub of progress and cooperation.

Vietnamese Ambassador Nguyen Huy Taing extended his congratulations to Cambodia for successfully organizing parliamentary elections and ensuring a smooth transition to a new National Assembly and government.

During the meeting, the Ambassador proposed that the National Assembly of Cambodia and Vietnam should foster leader exchanges, bolster cooperation, and establish new mechanisms. He also requested the National Assembly of Cambodia to support the implementation of past government agreements and continue collaboration on educational initiatives to help the younger generation comprehend the Cambodia-Vietnam relationship.

In response, Mr. Vong Sauth endorsed the Ambassador's suggestions and expressed his support for the recent proposal by Prime Minister Hun Manet of Cambodia to connect expressways and railways between the two countries. He regarded this as another milestone in development and looked forward to the swift realization of these projects to promote mutual progress for Cambodia and Vietnam.
