Ministry of Tourism urges US to Encourage Tourism and Investment

PHNOM PENH: Cambodia’s Ministry of Tourism asked the United States to encourage more tourism and investment in Cambodia, as the US is one of the largest economic partners for the Kingdom.

The proposal was made during a meeting between Minister of Tourism Sok Soken and the US Ambassador to Cambodia, W. Patrick Murphy, on October 10.

The Minister of Tourism touted his administration’s vision for the development of Cambodia's tourism sector under the new five-point BUILD strategy that aims to bring Cambodia’s tourism prestige up to international standards while also promoting the Kingdom’s unique qualities that make it a “must-see” travel destination. The Minister said that the vision is meant to be realized with a focus on building a good partnership between the government and the private sector.

Minister Sok Soken highlighted that US tourists are Cambodia's main target market, being among the top ten markets both before and after the Covid-19 crisis. The Minister requested the Ambassador to support the promotion of Cambodian tourism to the US market and to encourage more US tourists to visit Cambodia, especially potential investors.

The Ambassador praised the development of a clear strategy and vision for Cambodia's tourism sector and noted Cambodia’s success in overcoming the Covid-19 crisis. He said he sees strong potential for tourism development, especially in eco-tourism and agro-tourism. He said he would also like to see more Cambodian tourists visit the US to better facilitate travel between the two countries.

The two sides pledged to further strengthen tourism cooperation by promoting cultural and economic exchanges, building stronger people-to-people ties and enhancing mutual trust and mutual benefit.
