As Fishing Season Officially Begins, Ministry Warns Against Illegal Practices

PHNOM PENH: The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries issued details at the start of fishing season today. According to the memo, inland freshwater fishing is permitted from October 1-May 31 in the following provinces: include Kampong Chhnang, Pursat, Battambang, Pailin, Banteay Meanchey, Siem Reap, Oddar Meanchey, Preah Vihear, Ratanakiri, Mondulkiri, Kratie, Tbong Khmum, Kampong Cham, Kampong Thom, and parts of Phnom Penh and Kandal provinces north of the Chaktomuk River.

Freshwater fishing will be permitted in Prey Veng, Svay Rieng, Takeo, Kampong Speu and parts of Phnom Penh and Kandal provinces located south of the Chaktomuk River from November 1-June 30.

Fishing will be permitted in Stung Treng Province from October 1-April 30. Stung Treng is a habitat of the less than 100 Mekong dolphins struggling to survive. They are often victim to illegal fishing practices like electrocution and trawler nets.

The Fisheries Administration ordered those fishing to operate in accordance with fishery laws and regulations.
