Reconstructed Takav Gate Charms the Hearts of Visitors

SIEM REAP: The iconic Takav Gate is one of five surrounding the Angkor temple complex. With its restoration completed in February 2023, the APSARA Authority has provided guests with yet another spot for reflection on ancient Khmer achievements and, of course, photo opportunities.

Deputy Director of the agency stationed at the Takav gate, Leas Kimlek, said that tourists visit the gate every day and are captivated by its timeless appeal as the gate has four smiling faces, surrounded by waterfalls where small and large trees grow to create a very attractive landscape.

He said that the gate has another special feature at sunset, when the sunlight shines in golden hues on top of the structure, creating stunning beauty. In May 2022, the restoration team discovered even more of its beauty buried beneath vegetation and soil with Apsara fairies carved into the stone.

Leas Kimlek’s agency stands at the gate to guide tourists by identifying places to visit and danger zones. Unfortunately, he had to urge guests not to climb or step on the structure and often has to point out the signs posted for the safety of the guests and the temple complex, which can be threatened by the effects of overtourism from those who do not respect its legacy.
