Traditional Yike Musical Performance at Fine Arts School This Saturday

PHNOM PENH: Art lovers have an opportunity to experience a prominent form of traditional Cambodian musical theater this weekend at Phnom Penh’s Secondary School of Fine Arts.

Yike is a type of musical theater that involves singing and dancing, often while telling tales of the Buddha. The tradition is usually performed during festivals or national holidays. Before the play, a ceremony is held to invite the spirits of those who teach and love the dance to help the performers do their best.

This weekend, students will perform the drama “The Great Disciple of Visakha” which tells the story of the chief female patron of the Buddha who helped spread his message and founded one of the most important temples of his time.

The performance will be held at the school in Tuol Kork on Saturday, September 30 at 6pm. Tickets are 20,000 Riels (about $5) and can be bought at the school’s administration office or by Telegram at 077 663 670.
