PHNOM PENH: Anonymous hackers took over Cambodia’s National TV station (TVK) on the afternoon of September 19 and the Ministry of Information has warned the public not to trust the site while the government is in the process of regaining control of the page.

According to the Ministry of Information’s Department of National Television, one or more hackers gained control of the TVK Facebook page around 1 p.m. on September 19. The department is denying any responsibility for misinformation on the page since then and as of September 20, is still working to regain control of its content.

Ministry of Information spokesperson Tep Asnarith said that the ministry is cooperating with authorities to resolve the issue and said, “At this time we cannot comment on much. We will find out where it came from and what the purpose of it is."

TVK warned that anyone who uses this as an opportunity to post inappropriate images or false information will be held legally responsible under Cambodian law.

So far the page, which has one million Facebook followers, has only made a post requesting the page’s name be changed to Saigon News as a rebranding measure. The profile picture has also been changed to a drawing of a person shopping, entitled “Saigon News” and contact links have all been changed to defunct Saigon News links.
