PHNOM PENH: Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi left Cambodia yesterday with the assurance that the new government, led by Dr. Hun Manet, will uphold Chinese policies and work with China toward development and prosperity. During his two-day visit to Cambodia, Wang Yi met with the current Prime Minister Hun Sen, future Prime Minister Hun Manet, Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn and other Cambodian dignitaries to reaffirm China’s commitment to the Royal Government under CPP leadership, while confirming Cambodia’s support of China’s regional initiatives.
On August 13, Prime Minister Hun Sen hosted a luncheon in honor of Wang Yi at the Peace Palace, where the Chinese foreign minister congratulated Prime Minister Hun Sen and the CPP for receiving more than 80% of the people's support during last month’s election. He echoed the chorus of foreign observers from countries like Russia, Pakistan and Guinea-Bissau by praising the National Assembly election as fair, transparent and legitimate, with a reportedly high voter turnout. "This proves that the Cambodian people have fully exercised their right to vote, with more than 80% voting for the CPP to continue to lead the country, gaining the trust and support of the people is the most important factor." he said.
The foreign minister went on to encourage further cooperation between Cambodia and China under the leadership of Prime Minister Hun Manet. He welcomed the upcoming PM’s participation in the China-ASEAN Expo in Nanning, China next month. The future PM was also invited to celebrate the 10th anniversary of China’s Belt and Road Initiative in October to commemorate the country’s monumental infrastructure project that seeks to link East Asia to Europe.
Dr. Hun Manet reaffirmed Cambodia’s support of the “One China Policy,” whose major tenet states that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China and that the People’s Republic of China is the sole legitimate government of the country. He also pledged a position of non-interference in China’s internal affairs.
The two leaders pledged to continue to enhance cooperation between Cambodia and China by maintaining the past achievements as well as expanding the direction of cooperation in new areas such as: electricity, hydropower, infrastructure, agriculture and trade. In addition, the two sides also agreed to continue cooperation and mutual support in the regional and international framework.
