Biden and Zelensky to Meet At NATO Summit

US President Joe Biden is set to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during the NATO summit in Vilnius, Lithuania. The meeting, scheduled for Wednesday, is aimed at demonstrating unity between the US and Ukraine, despite disagreements over NATO's proposed security commitments to Kiev.

The decision to hold talks comes after uncertainties surrounding Zelensky's attendance at the summit. Reports earlier on Monday suggested that he might not attend due to a lack of clarity from NATO members regarding the support promised to Ukraine in its conflict with Russia.

Zelensky has made it clear that his attendance at the NATO meeting would only be meaningful if Ukraine is offered clear security guarantees or a roadmap for future accession to the US-led military bloc. While acknowledging that Ukraine cannot join NATO while the conflict with Russia is ongoing, Zelensky has called for concrete pledges about future membership.

Differing views exist among NATO members regarding the issue, with the US suggesting that security guarantees similar to those given to Israel could be provided to Ukraine instead of full membership. Biden is expected to discuss US security guarantees with Zelensky during their meeting in Vilnius.

Biden emphasized that Ukraine would need to make reforms even after the conflict ends before it can join NATO. He highlighted that there is no unanimity within NATO about bringing Ukraine into the alliance at the current stage of the war.

The meeting between Biden and Zelensky is significant in showing unity and support for Ukraine amidst Russia's invasion. The summit's agenda will heavily focus on Ukraine, as NATO leaders discuss a potential pathway to membership for the country and provide additional military assistance.

Biden's decision to provide cluster munitions to Ukraine has drawn criticism from some allied countries, and he may face scolding from allies during the summit. However, Zelensky expressed gratitude for the timely defense aid package provided by the United States, emphasizing that it will enhance Ukraine's defense capabilities and bring them closer to victory over the enemy.

The Biden-Zelensky meeting follows previous high-profile encounters between the two leaders, with Zelensky seeking a clearer pathway to NATO membership and security guarantees for Ukraine. The meeting underscores the ongoing support between the US and Ukraine in their shared goal of countering Russia's aggression and promoting democracy.
