Over 200 Landmines Destroyed in Mondulkiri

MONDULKIRI: The Cambodian Blue Hat Army destroyed more than 200 landmines and unexploded ordnances, as well as more than 60,000 shrapnel shards left over from the war in Mondulkiri province. The munitions were destroyed on the morning of June 4.

Senior Deputy Minister of Mines Authority and Director General of the National Peacekeeping Center, Gen. Sem Sovanny, confirmed that the government had set aside over nine million square meters of land to be cleared in Mondulkiri and returned to families in the area. So far, experts have cleared more than eight million square meters of unexploded ordnance, equivalent to 80%of the total land allocated to 614 families.

Deputy Governor Nuon Saran confirmed that Mondulkiri is a province that is less vulnerable to the threat of landmines and unexploded ordnance which in the past, have only cause a few scattered incidents. He emphasized that the Royal Government has set a strategic plan to completely demine Cambodia by 2025 by establishing a fund for the project and implementing it in all 25 provinces.
