Delta Variant Scares Hit Russey Keo and Toul Kork

Phnom Penh: Authorities in Phnom Penh have blocked off Street 93 in Phsar Touch Village in Russey Keo’s Sangkat Toul Sangke I. The area’s market has also been closed. Street 372, 372-Z and Street 362 in Village 5 of Sangkat Boeung Salang in Toul Kork have also been sealed off. On Street 93, the affected area is from Ponhea Krek Primary School to House #116 in Borey KC.

Suspected Delta variant cases of Covid-19 have been found in the areas. While Street 93 will remain closed for seven days, Toul Kork’s Village 5 will be closed for 14 days. All residents are being tested and monitored. Red zones have not officially been declared.

The new cases of the Delta variant are among the 215 identified by the Ministry of Health since Saturday. Most of the country’s Delta cases have been detected in healthcare workers and teachers associated with migrant workers returning from Thailand, although there are at least five cases in Phnom Penh as of Monday.

The Delta variant is almost 300% more transmissible than the original virus that causes Covid-19. America’s Center for Disease Control announced at the weekend that Delta is as contagious as chicken pox.
