PM Call for Removal of Song that ‘Misrepresents Cambodia’s History

PHNOM PENH: Prime Minister Hun Sen asked Meas Soksophea to remove a song entitled “The Death of Jayavarman VII”, which he sees as a serious affront to Cambodian history.

In an audio message on the night of June 4, the PM stated that the song misrepresents the history of Cambodia, causing confusion as there is still controversy surrounding the details of the death of Jayavarman VII.

The song “The Death of Jayavarman VII" was composed by Pich Sangvavong, also known as Ta Sak Sar Phnom Tbeng, and references the religious conflict and execution of Jayavarman VII.

Additionally, the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts also urged Meas Sok Sophea and other stakeholders to delete the song "Death of Jayavarman VII" from Facebook and other social networks Immediately.

The ministry said that the song was produced without any real evidence, which confuses the history of Cambodia. The ministry then called on artists as well as producers who wish to create and produce works related to national culture or history to conduct a comprehensive study or request the assistance of Ministry of Culture researchers to preserve historical and cultural values that reflect the beauty of the nation.
